Sambizanga, 1972

Set in Angola in 1961 at the beginning of the anti-colonial struggle, the film follows Domingos Xavier, an MPLA activist arrested by Portuguese colonial police. While he is tortured and refuses to betray his comrades, his wife Maria searches desperately from prison to prison, unaware of his fate. The story becomes both a personal tragedy and a portrait of Angola's liberation movement.
